As priests leave this time together, I hope that our shared reflection will draw them to take another look at their identity, ministry, and mission—who they are, what they do, and for what purpose.

After a quick summary of my presentation at the Chicago Priests’ Convocation in June, 2014, I want to fill out a sense of the direction that Pope Francis is giving to priests and bishops. Here are some of the topics I want to offer for your consideration, reflection, and comment:
- breaking beyond the ideological fault lines in today’s Church
- ·reframing preaching by focusing on the preacher’s heart
- ·a new key for understanding and living celibacy: pastoral intimacy
- ·re-aligning our mission to staff a “field hospital” in the world
- finally coming to terms with a ministerial spirituality
- ·a new sense of pastoral response signaled by the recent synods
- ·the perils and possibilities of serving with other priests.
As priests leave this time together, I hope that our shared reflection will draw them to take another look at their identity, ministry, and mission—who they are, what they do, and for what purpose.
